Spotify Tips for Musicians - Growing Your Followers and Streams - Two Vital Techniques

John Clark joined us for this weekend's TEAM Mastermind (more on the Mastermind below). John is a talented musician who set a goal for himself regarding Spotify streams, and then managed to far exceed it.

John's goal was to reach 1 million Spotify streams in a year. He did it! Then he went on to blow that out of the water!

Multiple Artist Monikers

One of John's key techniques is one that most users would probably never think of, as it seems somewhat counterintuitive. John creates music in a number of formats. One fundamental approach that has enabled his path to streaming success on Spotify has been to use multiple artist names with each having its own unique Spotify page!

For example, John's classical piano music is all posted on Spotify under the artist moniker, "Helen Green" (he informed us that this was the name of a grandmother he admired).

Check it out - "Helen Green" is approaching 40,000 followers and many of the songs posted for this artist have 6 figures in listens (with the top song approaching 1 million streams!):

John also collaborates with other artists to create instrumental covers of songs and posts those under another artist name, and he has several other artist names for other types of music that he writes and publishes.

Connect with Spotify Playlist Curators in applicable Genres

As you will hear if you listen to the short Mastermind excerpt posted above, another vital method John recommends to help grow your following and streams is to build a network of playlist curators. Find curators and playlists in your genre, and follow them. See if you can find them on social media and connect with them.

This process - connecting with curators - is a dialogue in and of itself. There are lots of different ways to try and connect with and pitch to Spotify Playlist Curators. Here are some recommendations directly from Spotify (note that these require that you have a Spotify for Artists service, which is highly recommended for musicians). Of course, there are also paid services that enable you to pitch to curators, and these can be very useful and legit, but some are not, so be cautious and do your research!

We hope to learn and share more here about the most successful ways to connect with Spotify Curators and their playlists. In the meanwhile, if you have some solid, trustworthy tips, please share in the comments below. We'd love to hear from you!
